The IQM scheme is designed as a self auditing tool. Schools use the tracking documentation to store information against the element headings. This can take time and will undoubtedly involve a wide range of staff, ensuring that this document is a central descriptor of the holistic approaches within the school that have an impact on Inclusion practices.
The scheme seeks to validate the school judgements and to allow an experienced assessor to interrogate the school information. Where appropriate, the assessor will also offer advice and suggestions for further school development. They bring into the school significant experience, both as educators and assessors.
Schools that have undertaken the journey to the Inclusion Quality Mark note that it:-
- Is professionally supportive.
- Recognises existing inclusive practices.
- Has an emphasis is on practical evaluation – it is firmly rooted in what happens in schools.
- Involves all stakeholders in the school.
- Is a usable framework as an evaluative tool.
- Embeds the concept of a self-evaluation process rather than a series of tick boxes.
- Is externally assessed and moderated by a highly professional team.
- Recognises and celebrates the work going on in schools on inclusion.
